Chapter 5

Friday morning a heavy fog of the pea soup variety blocked all but a few golden rays of sunshine. Devin frowned as he shrugged into a tattered grey sweatshirt and made his way outside of the tiny cabin to the yard where his grandfather tossed feed to his chickens. Old Nate was a tall, lean man with shoulders like an ox and biceps like a prize fighter. He wore his hair, once tar black, now streaked with silver, in one long braid down the center of his back.

“We gonna be able to sail this morning?” Devin asked, flipping his bangs back from his eyes.

Old Nate paused to look up at the sky. “Storm’s coming.”

“The radar said it wouldn’t be here until tonight.”

His grandfather peered at him. “I’ll assume that’s a question, not you arguing my answer. ‘Cause we both know it makes little sense for a man to ask a question if he’s just going to argue the answer.”

Devin’s lips quirked in amusement. “No, that wouldn’t make any sense, sir.”

His grandfather nodded. Once. Then turned his attention back to the chickens. “Radar gets it wrong sometimes.”

Devin rubbed the back of his neck. Everything was wrong sometimes. Heck, for all he knew, his grandfather with his “sky knowledge” was wrong. An image of Sydney’s reaction last week when he’d told her they’d sail today danced to mind. His heart pinched at the thought of letting her down. “If we don’t go this morning, Sydney won’t be able to go until next year.”

“That would be a shame. But the pain of delaying a sail is nothing compared to what can happen if you sail into a storm.”

Devin shrugged. “Seems like a good way to test our boat.”

“That’s one test you don’t want to fail.” Old Nate laughed so loud the rooster crowed. When he stopped laughing, the serious look in his eyes jolted the last bit of sleepiness from Devin’s mind. “You let Sydney make her own decision. Then run it by Gloria. I’d worry less about a force ten storm than I would her grandmother’s fury if anything happened to one of her young.”

A shiver ran up Devin’s spine. His grandfather had a point. He’d pick a cat ten storm over Big Mama any day of the week.

Unable to contain her delight, Sydney dashed ahead of Big Mama when she spotted Devin waiting for her on the ferry dock. “I’ll wait up for you by the gate,” she called over her shoulder as her grandmother waved her on.

She was out of breath by the time she reached him, as much from the jog as from her excitement over the sail. “What’s that look for?” she asked, stopping short in front of him and taking stock of his facial expression.

“Can’t hide anything from you. Can I?”

“Why would you want to?”

Devin shook his head, not bothering to answer her question. In a way she was glad. He had a thing for logic and numbers that made his answers tend toward precision on questions that were merely rhetorical.
